Things a PCP should know about Endocrinology in 2023!
The landscape for Endocrinology and particularly Diabetes has undergone a major paradigm shift in the last few years that will translate into changes for disease management in 2023. The armamentarium of agents used to treat Diabetes now has a focus that has shifted from just strict glycemic control, to one that incorporates Cardio-Renal protection as well as inducing weight loss. The category of drugs includes SGLT-2 Inhibitors as well as GLP-1, whose arrival on the scene has altered the management of not only diabetes, but cardiology as well as renal diseases, with a major impact on weight as well that also helps with glycemic control. These newer agents do not discount the roles of older medications, including insulin in the management of DM, but will be complementary to use with the older agents as well, perhaps moving towards the front of the treatment paradigm. 2023 is an exciting time to be practicing Endocrinology.
As wait times for new patients to an Endocrinologist can exceed 3-4 months, Dr. Rohit Dwivedi, Endocrinology Department lead at nodSpecialists, observed: “One of the multitude of reasons that I joined nodSpecialist is because their business model provides greater patient access to specialists: faster access to specialist can lead to better patient care. This, in turn, should lower costs in the long run as patients receive faster/better care and have fewer complications due to their condition(s).” For nodSpecialists - as of March 2023 - wait times for new patients to see Endocrinologists is only 2-3 weeks!
